Butcher block countertop installation Davie, FL: a honey-blond maple run with the glue lines visible in the eased edge, over shaker cabinets

Wood is the only countertop material that is still doing something after you install it. Stone and quartz are finished objects: they arrive at their final size and stay there. A butcher block top takes on and gives up moisture from the air in your kitchen for as long as you own it, which means it swells in August and shrinks in January, and every real decision on this page follows from that one fact: how thick, which grain, where it goes, how it is fastened.

When Butcher Block Is the Right Counter for Your Kitchen

Butcher block is the right counter in a Davie kitchen when you want warmth in the room and you are willing to do two things a year to keep it. It is the wrong one almost everywhere else, and being specific about the line is more useful than a list of benefits.

You want the room to feel warmer than stone makes it. This is the honest first reason and nobody should apologize for it. A maple or walnut top next to painted cabinets does something to a kitchen that no engineered slab does, and in a 1980s Davie house with a low ceiling and one window it can be the difference between a kitchen that reads renovated and one that reads replaced.

You have a budget that stone will not fit, and you would rather spend it on wood than on the cheapest stone. A butcher block island costs a fraction of a stone island, and the version you can afford in wood is usually nicer than the version you can afford in granite. That is a real trade and plenty of our customers make it deliberately.

You are putting it somewhere that stays dry. This is the qualifying condition, and in South Florida it is stricter than it is up north. Wood equilibrates with the humidity around it, and the air in a Florida house sits at the wet end of the range: Building Science Corporation's report on hot-humid climates puts the interior target at 60 percent relative humidity at 75 degrees, and notes that wood held at 60 percent carries about 11 percent moisture by weight against 5 percent at 25 percent. Your kitchen lives near the top of that band all summer. The wood will move, and it will move more here than the installation video from Ohio suggests.

Where butcher block is the wrong call: wrapped around an undermount sink, under a coffee machine that steams, or in a house where the A/C gets shut off for months while nobody is home. Standing water at a seam is the one thing wood does not forgive, and a snowbird house that sits closed and humid all summer will move a wood top further than the fasteners can follow. If that is your situation we will say so, and we will usually propose the compromise that most Davie kitchens land on anyway: wood on the island, something harder on the run with the sink in it.

Edge Grain, End Grain, Face Grain: What You Are Actually Choosing

The species matters less than people expect. What actually changes the price, the look and how the top behaves is how the wood was cut and glued, and there are three ways to do it.

Edge grain

Narrow strips turned on edge and glued side by side, so the finished top reads as long parallel lines running the length of the counter. This is what most people picture when they say butcher block, it is what almost every stock slab is, and it is the one we specify unless there is a reason not to. It is stable because each narrow strip moves a little instead of one wide board moving a lot, it is the cheapest of the three to make, and it takes a knife without complaint.

End grain

Short blocks stood on end and glued into a checkerboard, so the surface you cut on is the cut ends of the fibers. It is the real butcher's block, the one in a butcher shop, and it is genuinely better to cut on: the fibers part and close instead of being sliced across, so knives stay sharp longer and the board heals its own marks. It is also the thickest, the heaviest, the most expensive by a distance, and the most sensitive to moisture, because end grain drinks. As a working island top it is wonderful. As a full perimeter it is an expensive way to buy a problem.

Face grain

Wide flat boards glued side by side, so the top shows the full cathedral figure of the board the way a tabletop does. It is the most beautiful of the three and the least suited to being cut on, because every mark stays where you put it and a wide board moves the most with the season. We build it when the counter is doing furniture work rather than kitchen work: a peninsula that people sit at, a bar top, an island nobody chops on. We say plainly that it is a surface to protect rather than a surface to use.

Edge grain, end grain and face grain: the same wood built three ways, in ascending order of what it costs and descending order of how much it looks like furniture.

How a Butcher Block Countertop Installation Runs, Step by Step

  1. The dry-or-wet conversation, before the measurement. We ask where the wood is going and what happens within three feet of it. A sink, a dishwasher vent and a coffee machine each change the answer, and it is cheaper to move the wood on a drawing than to replace it in four years.
  2. Measure and scope, at your house, free. We measure the run, look at the sink and cooktop you have or want, check whether the cabinets are level, and write down what changes.
  3. A written number before anything is ordered. One price, itemized: material, fabrication, edge, cutouts, finish and installation. It does not move unless you approve a change in scope.
  4. Species, grain and thickness, decided together. Maple, oak and walnut behave differently and cost differently, and the grain construction from the section above is decided here, not later. Thickness follows: 1½ inch for a perimeter run, 3 inch when the island is the point.
  5. Acclimation in your house, not in our shop. The top sits unwrapped in the room it is going into for several days before anything is cut, so it arrives at your kitchen's humidity rather than ours. Skipping this is the single most common cause of a joint that opens in month two.
  6. Fabrication, and fastening that lets the wood move. Cutouts are cut from the template, then all six faces get finished, the underside and the cutout edges included, because an unfinished face takes on moisture at a different rate and cups the top. The counter is fastened to the cabinets through slotted holes and figure-eight clips, never glued down flat, because the wood has to be free to change width. The numbers behind that are not opinion: the Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook publishes the shrinkage figures for every domestic species, and hard maple moves 9.9 percent across the growth rings against 4.8 percent across the radius, roughly twice as much in one direction as the other, and essentially nothing along the length.
  7. Installation, first finish and the honest walkthrough. The top is set, leveled, joined and given its first coat. Then we show you what maintenance actually is, which is about fifteen minutes twice a year, and we tell you where the first dark mark will appear, which is almost always the low corner nearest the sink.

What Butcher Block Countertop Installation Costs in Davie

We do not publish our own price for butcher block, and the reason is the same one that applies to every number on this site: a rate per square foot without a kitchen attached to it is a guess. What we can do is show you the bands this market publishes and tell you what each one is measuring.

RangeBuildWhat it measures
$30 – $60 / sq ftstock edge grainmaple or birch slab, standard sizes, cut and installed
$60 – $110 / sq ftcustom edge grainmade to your template in maple, oak or walnut, installed
$110 – $200+ / sq ftend grain and face graincheckerboard end grain or wide-plank walnut, installed

Those are installed figures for South Florida. The reason butcher block reads as the cheap option is the bottom row of that table, and it is real: a stock maple slab is the least expensive counter you can put in a kitchen that is not laminate. What is not real is assuming the whole material is cheap. A three-inch walnut end grain island costs more than most granite, and people are regularly surprised by that in the wrong direction.

What actually moves the number

Grain construction first, and by a distance: the same maple costs roughly three times as much built end grain as built edge grain, because it is three times the work. Then species: maple and birch at the bottom, red oak in the middle, walnut on its own at the top. Then thickness, then square footage, then the cutouts, then whether the run turns a corner, because a corner is a joint and a joint in wood is fabrication rather than a cut.

Your zip code is not on that list. We charge the same in Davie, Weston and Fort Lauderdale.

One thing worth knowing before you compare quotes

Ask each company whether the number includes finishing all six faces, and what the finish is. A quote built on a top that is oiled on the visible faces only is a cheaper quote and a shorter-lived counter, and the difference does not show up for about a year. Ask the same about the fasteners: if nobody can tell you how the top is attached, it is being glued down, and a glued-down wood counter in this climate is a crack with a date on it.

Why Choose Us

The counter is templated on your installed cabinets and fabricated before anything comes out, which is the operating rule behind the two numbers that matter here: two to three weeks from template to installation, and one to two days without a kitchen.

You get a written number before anything is ordered, itemized down to the cutouts, and it holds. If the cabinets turn out not to be level enough to carry the top without packing, and in a 1980s Davie kitchen that happens, you see it, you get the cost to correct it, and you decide before we go further.

And with wood specifically, we install it the way it has to be installed in this climate rather than the way the box says: acclimated in your house, finished on all six faces, and fastened so it can move. Those three things are most of the difference between a wood counter that looks good in eight years and one that has an open joint in eight months, and none of them are visible in a photograph of a finished kitchen, which is exactly why they are worth asking every company about.

The crews work under Gaven Constructions, license CGC1524886, insured, with a two-year workmanship warranty on the installation. And someone answers this phone from 7 AM to 10 PM every day, which is the part most people end up caring about while they are collecting three estimates.

Licensed, Insured, and Permitted in Davie

A countertop swap on its own is usually the least regulated part of a kitchen: nothing structural moves, and the top sits on cabinets that are already there. What pulls it into review is the plumbing. Disconnecting and reconnecting a sink is one thing; relocating the sink, moving a drain or changing a supply line is another, and so is any electrical that has to move for a new cooktop cutout. The determination on your particular scope belongs to the Town of Davie's building office, not to us, and we do not publish a table telling you which side of that line your job falls on, because following a contractor's table is your exposure and not ours. What we publish is when you find out: in the written estimate, priced, before you approve the project.

Common Questions

What is the downside of butcher block countertops in a Davie kitchen?

It moves, it marks, and it needs you. Those are the three, and the first one is bigger here than it is anywhere with a real winter, because the air in a South Florida house sits humid most of the year and wood follows the air. A top that is fastened correctly handles that invisibly; a top that is glued down flat opens a joint. The marking is honest wear: knife cuts, dark rings where a wet glass sat, a scorch if somebody puts a hot pan straight down. The flip side is the thing no other counter offers, which is that all of it sands out. The maintenance is real but small, roughly fifteen minutes of oiling twice a year. The failure mode of butcher block is not the material giving up. It is an owner who was told it was zero-maintenance and believed it.

What does butcher block countertop installation cost in Davie, FL?

Installed, a stock edge grain maple or birch top in a Davie kitchen generally runs $30 to $60 per square foot, a custom edge grain top made to your template in maple, oak or walnut runs $60 to $110, and end grain or wide-plank face grain starts around $110 and goes past $200 for walnut. Those are installed numbers, which is the only kind worth comparing: a slab price from a big-box shelf leaves out template, cutouts, finishing and installation, and on wood those are a larger share of the job than they are on stone. The thing that moves the number most is not the species, it is the grain construction: the same maple costs roughly three times as much built end grain as edge grain. We will put a written, itemized figure in front of you before anything is ordered, and it holds unless you approve a change in scope.

Is butcher block cheaper than granite or quartz in a Davie kitchen?

At the bottom of the range, clearly yes. A stock edge grain maple top is the least expensive counter you can install in a Davie kitchen short of laminate, and it comes in well under where stock granite starts. At the top of the range, no: a three-inch walnut end grain island costs more than most of the granite we install and more than a lot of the quartz. So the accurate answer is that butcher block has the widest floor-to-ceiling spread of anything on this site, and comparing it to stone only means something once you have named the grain and the species. What does not change with price is the trade: you are buying a surface that needs twice-yearly attention and can be sanded back to new, instead of one that needs nothing and can never be repaired.

What is the 7 rule for butcher block, and does it matter in Davie?

The rule of seven is an oiling schedule for a brand-new top, not a rule about the wood itself: a coat of food-safe mineral oil once a day for the first seven days, then about once a week through the first month, and a much longer interval after that. It is front-loaded because new wood is thirsty, and the first coats disappear into the grain almost as fast as you can spread them. Once the top stops drinking, the surface tells you when it is due instead of the calendar: water that soaks in instead of beading up, or color gone pale and dull. How often that comes around depends on how hard the counter is worked, since every wash takes a little oil with it, and end grain drinks more than edge grain. Where it matters in Davie is a different seven days, earlier, before the top is ever cut. A top built and stored in a dry warehouse arrives at a Davie kitchen carrying less moisture than the room, and it will take some on. That is why we leave it unwrapped in the room it is going into for several days before anything is cut. Skipping the acclimation is the most common reason a joint opens up a month or two after installation, and it is entirely avoidable.

Do you put plywood under a butcher block countertop in a Davie kitchen?

No, and this one surprises people who have installed laminate. A wood top has to breathe on both faces: laid flat on a plywood or MDF deck, the underside cannot exchange moisture at the same rate as the top, and the difference between the two faces cups the counter. Butcher block sits on the cabinet frames themselves, spanning the openings, and it is fastened through slotted holes or with figure-eight clips so it can change width without splitting. On a run with a wide unsupported span we add cleats, not a deck. And the underside gets exactly the same finish as the top, which is the other half of the same rule.

Can you use Clorox wipes on butcher block countertops in a Davie kitchen?

Not as a habit. Disinfecting wipes and bleach sprays strip an oil finish and, used repeatedly, will lighten and dry the surface until it looks chalky. What a wood counter wants day to day is a cloth with warm soapy water, wrung out rather than wet, and dried off afterward. For raw chicken, wash the spot with soap and water first, then a wipe on that spot, then rinse and dry it. Do not let it sit. Standing liquid of any kind is the real enemy here, more than any particular cleaner: a puddle left overnight raises the grain and leaves a dark mark, and that is the one thing that sends people looking for sandpaper. Keep a bottle of food-safe mineral oil under the sink on day one.

Does butcher block add value to a home in Davie?

Less than stone does on a resale spreadsheet, and more than you would think in the room. Buyers in this market read granite and quartz as the finished, permanent choice, so a full kitchen in wood can read as a personal decision rather than an upgrade, and that costs a little at appraisal. Wood on the island with stone on the working perimeter reads as a design choice instead, and that combination is the one we install most often in Davie for exactly this reason: it gets you the warmth in the room without asking a buyer to accept a maintenance commitment they did not choose. If resale in the next three years is part of the calculation, that is the version to build. If you are staying, build whatever you actually want to cook on.

Tell us where the wood is going, and we will tell you whether it belongs there.

Measure the run of counter along each wall and tell us the sink and the cooktop. The first thing we will ask is whether the wood is going next to the sink, because that answer changes the recommendation more than the budget does.
